Pather Panchali deals with the life of the Roy family, consisting of Harihar, Sarbajaya, Apu and Durga, both in their ancestral village Nishchindipur in rural Bengal and later when they move to Varanasi in search of a better life, as well as the anguish and loss they face during their travels. It first appeared as a serial in a Calcutta periodical in 1928 and was published as a book the next year; it was the first published novel written by the author. It was followed in 1932 by a sequel Aparajito, which was later also adapted into a film of the same name by Satyajit Ray.

I loved the movie better than the book (English translation). The story was entirely lost in translation and almost made me mourn for the loss :-(The book did not give me a chance to complete, the writer could have done justice in translation, but this is a book that has to be read in the original Bengali language. Its a celebration experience of small incidents occurring to a boy Opu.
Beyond me. Beyond any man who can read or write Bengali.
The best book I have read so far in my life. The raw emotion in the sentences are so powerful. The characters are etched in my mind very powerfully. I had to stop reading the book towards the end because I could not gather the emotional stability to read on, such is the power in the words. I finally finished the book after laying off for a week. Unbelievable writing! I will never forget Durga and Opu.

I loved the slowness of this book and the movie was excellent.
I wish I could read Bengali !!. This is the Indian equivalent of Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird. But this novel contented with children's world without much major social or political chaos. Another important thing, there is no solid story or proper handling of time. The novel is about the rural domestic Bengali village life correlating a boy's childhood with his family in a very simple language. Author's command over children's psychology is outstanding. I hope for another better English
